Fully Integrated ICT Platform for Operational Management of Ultracapacitors

SkelStart Engine Start Module

The SkelStart ESM is the first commercially available product developed by Skeleton Technologies within the Fully Integrated ICT Platform for Operational Management of Ultracapacitors project.

The Skeleton Technologies SkelStart ESM increases revenue through saving fuel, reducing the number of batteries needed over the lifetime of the truck and reducing down-time due to jump-starts. Additionally the ESM reduces driver tiredness and stress and decreases pollution.

The SkelStart Engine Start Module makes sure that trucking fleets do not lose money due to penalties on late deliveries and roadside assistance fees when drivers get stuck with a dead batteries.

By not having to worry about starting the engine, less time is spent unnecessary idling that directly results in money saved on fuel costs. Not only that, but because the ESM is used for starting the engine, not the battery, the battery lifetime is extended as high current cranking is handled only by the ESM.

Long-haul drivers, who do not have to wake up in the middle of the night to idle the engine and to charge the battery, are better rested and more capable of concentrating on the road to ensure reliable deliveries.

Skeleton Technologies’ Ultracapacitor Module Development Project Implemented by Enterprise Estonia

Skeleton Technologies is developing new, more efficient ways to store and use energy by utilizing its patented ultracapacitor technology. One such development project is conducted in cooperation with NXTech AS, a Norwegian high-tech design and engineering company.

The main objective of the project is to develop a fully integrated ICT-based platform to manage Skeleton Technologies ultracapacitor cells and modules, which through further development can be used in a multitude of applications.

In order to reach the main objective, Skeleton Technologies is developing multiple smaller systems to support the development of a comprehensive ICT platform:

  • A voltage monitoring and control system
  • A temperature monitoring and cooling control system
  • A leak detection system
  • Programmable bi-directional analogue-to-digital inverter integration with Skeleton’s technology
  • Software to enable application-based energy profiles. 

By reaching these project milestones Skeleton Technologies will increase the efficiency and reliability of its ultracapacitor-based devices, as well as reduce or eliminate the elements of overvoltage and overheating in ultracapacitor systems. The technological advancements will also lower the price per energy unit by increasing the ultracapacitor modules’ operating voltage range.

The project was started on 1st of January 2014 and will be concluded by 31st of March 2016.

The project, titled “Fully Integrated Information and Communication Technology Platform for Operational Management of Ultracapacitors”, is co-financed by Norway Grants. Norway Grants represents the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to reducing economic and social disparities and to strengthening bilateral relations with 16 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltics.

The project was implemented by Enterprise Estonia “Green Industry Innovation Estonia” –program, which aims to increase the competitiveness of green enterprises, including greening of existing industries through green innovation and green entrepreneurship.
